The phrase I hear most from people who have never done CrossFit is, “I can’t do CrossFit, it’s way too hard”. While I won’t disagree that it’s hard, I promise you can do it.
I feel the best way to speak to this is through my personal experience. Back in 2015 while living in Las Vegas I was in bar and I noticed a bunch of jacked dudes and ladies weightlifting, running and doing burpees on TV. The commentators were talking about how CrossFit is the “sport of exercise”. I thought to myself, that has got to be the dumbest thing ever, exercise as a sport?
I play sports, not exercise as a competition and I never will do something like that. As it grew in popularity I met some crossfitters and all they talked about was CrossFit this and CrossFit that. I again thought, these people were fanatical and a little extreme to say the least. But they were in shape and they seemed like they had a pretty tight knit group of folks, which I thought was cool for them.
Fast forward a couple years and I am now living in Wilmington, DE…Where, Delaware. Yeah not exactly the hotbed of anything but career took me there and was looking to make the most of it. For the first few months I was there I spent my days working and my nights binge watching episode after episode of American Ninja Warrior. Pretty exciting stuff. Then one night while watching ANW, I realized I had become sedentary, isolated and out of shape. I thought to myself, “Hey! instead of spending hours alone in front of the TV watching in shape people overcoming amazing challenges and reaching for their goals, I could actually try and get myself back in shape”.
I had previously tried globo gyms, private boxing lessons, soccer leagues, etc. Gyms were cheap and easy but I always ended up flaming out. Private training was good but expensive as all be. And let’s be honest rec spots leagues are more about socializing than actually getting in shape. CrossFit seemed to be a nice mix of the three. Not as expensive as a private trainer but still receive coaching every time I walk into the gym. More intense than recreational sports and included a bit of a community/social feel. Or so I had heard.
That’s when I gave CrossFit a try. I googled CrossFit gyms near me and found a few with in a 10-15 minute drive and decided I would go visit a few to see what it was all about. Admittedly, I was a little intimidated about going to a gym where I didn’t know anyone and I didn’t really know what to expect, but didn’t have much to lose. I tried 3 different CrossFit gyms before I found the one that fit my personality and what I was looking for. Each box has an identity and it is important to find one that you feel meets your needs.
When I first started I felt like a fish out of water. Learning new movements and lifts that I had never heard of before. And this is where I fell in love with CrossFit. The coaches helped me before and during the workout out to scale the workout to my ability. Instead of squatting 135lbs they started me out at 65lbs. and helped me to focus on form and technique. I was also a lot more out of shape than I realized and consistently finished last during workouts, but again the other members were there to push me and help me work harder than I would have on my own or with a personal trainer.
For the first few months I wanted to die after every workout but kept going because I loved the way I felt both physically and mentally. As the months went by and I suffered through workouts together with other members, which became life long friends. Before I knew it 1 month turned in to a year and a year into 2 and so on and so on. With constant variation I always have had ways to challenge myself and have never felt bored or complacent.
So here I am today. I own a CorssFit gym. Why? Because I want to help people have the same experience I did. We all start somewhere. we all have different goals, we all have different abilities. But one thing is for sure, CrossFit is for you and you can do it. It’s gonna be hard, it’s gonna take commitment but it’s gonna be worth it.
